Lacey
These photos are of Lacey. She is our latest Dane in need.

When Lacey came in at 4 months old, she was limping on one front leg.
Dr. Morgan did x-rays of her elbow and there was a floating bone at the
end of her ulna. He referred her x-rays to Dr. Bauer who said to wait
and re-do the x-rays at 6 months of age. In the last two months her
elbows(both now) have gotten fluid in them and it looks like little
water balloons hanging from her elbows. Dr. Morgan saw her again
yesterday and re-did the x- rays. Both elbows now have the floating bone
that should be connected to the ulna. Dr. Morgan was taking the x-rays
home last night so Michelle can take them to Dr. Bauer today. It is a
surgery case. He said she will probably have trouble with her elbows for
the rest of her life but if we do the surgery she will have a much more
normal life.

Update 12-10-04

Lacey's surgery, although very long, went well! They were able to spay her and remove the growth she had at the same time as fixing her elbows. Dr. Morgan thinks she should heal up and be a normal puppy after her 6 week recovery! She does NOT like the e-collar apparently and they are going to keep her at the vet until Monday so that she stays calm, but it will all depend on her stress level over the next 24 hours.

Below are photos of Lacey's surgery.

Update 12-14-04

Lacey is doing as well as to be expected. She came home from the vet Monday afternoon. She was very happy to be home, but not so happy about the crating requirements. She is on activity restriction (leash only) for 6 weeks. She is also on strong pain medication. She is able to walk, but it looks very painful when she does. Her incisions look great with no signs of infection. Dr. Morgan wants to see her again in 10 days and then again at 4 weeks for x-rays. She will then need more x-rays done at 8 weeks. Lacey is in for a very long recovery. Dr. Morgan is very hopeful that this will give her a normal life.

Update 12-29-04

Lacey went back into the vet for her one week check up. Dr. Morgan felt that her legs were a little too unstable so he put her in splints. She will have to go into the vet once or twice a week for splint checks. He is hoping she will be able to wear them for 4-5 weeks. She gets around the house very well. She is starting very slowly to open up to strangers. We plan on trying to get her out a little more often to help her realize that all people are not bad people.

Jan.14th

Lacey had x-rays done 5 weeks after surgery. Her legs were healing, but not as fast as the Dr's would like to see. There was also a concern that there may be some infection in her legs. She was put on long term antibiotics and sent back to her foster home to recover more. She is very happy and learning that the world is not such a bad place. She is still timid but making improvements daily.

Feb. 8th

Lacey is still having some problems with her legs. She gets around very well, but her legs are still swollen. Her most favorite activity is laying on the couch. Typical dane! She will be returning to the vet next week for more x-rays to see if the legs and elbows are healing.

Lacey went to her forever home with Lori in Elizabeth. Lori has adopted from RMGDRI before, so she has lots of experience with Danes and is the perfect home for Lacey. She will have 2 Dane sisters named Molly and Fancy, a Lab Mix brother named Murphy, 2 cats, 4 parrots, horses, and a mule to play with. Her new mom will make sure she feels loved and safe for the rest of her life like she deserves!
