Gracie Lou Hardy

September 8 1998 - December 10 2004

Gracie Lou came to our home in May 2003 through our efforts with Rocky Mountain Great Dane Rescue. She was on her "Last" day at the Aurora Animal Shelter when we went to get her. Shortly after coming into our house we discovered that she had a spinal cord problem that affected the ability to control her bowel movements. Numerous doctors were consulted and many medications were tried, but none offered any help. Discussions among the board members of our group came to the conclusion that she would not be a candidate for adoption since no one would want a dog that had accidents in the house. We were given the option of euthanizing her, or keeping her in permanent foster care. So, Dawn and I threw her a big party and took her to the river for a big play day.

Shortly after returning home from the river, we decided instead, to buy a steam cleaner, a crib mattress for a bed and plastic sheets! With careful feeding and lots of trips outside, we enjoyed a happy, heathly year with Gracie. She loved to play with the other puppies, go for walks, and visit with people.

In the Spring of this year, Gracie attended training classes with Sarah Fricke at Waggin' Tales. She tested and earned the AKC Canine Good Citizen award. Gracie would be able to do therapy work with local hospitals and senior homes.

Unfortunately, shortly thereafter, Gracie's condition took a turn for the worse. She began having problems with her bladder, and was starting to have difficulty with the stairs. Her hind legs just didn't work like they were supposed to, and she often fell on the slick wood floors in our house. It was clear that she wouldn't be able to make public appearances. Shortly before Thanksgiving, she had a Grand Mal Seizure and we knew she was starting to suffer. With deep regret, we decided to send this angel to a better place. She passed in the arms of those that loved her and will suffer no more.
