Maggie

Maggie was originally picked up as a stray in Okmulgee, OK and came to us from the Okmulgee Humane Society. We are assuming that her previous owners probably turned her loose due to mammary tumors. The shelter where she was at previously is a very small organization and didn't have the resources for long-term care, which is why they contacted us for help. One of their volunteers was kind enough to drive and meet one of our volunteers near Kansas and Maggie was then transported all the way to Colorado!

After her arrival, we took her immediately to the vet. They took several x-rays to make sure that the tumors had not metastasized into her lungs. The good news is that the films were clear.

Maggie is definitely one of a kind and everyone has fallen in love with her who has met her. Despite all she has been through at the clinic this week and at the shelter prior to that she is the happiest dog ever. Her tail is wagging literally all the time! No matter what we have had to do with her, she has been excited about the entire experience. She wags her tail while we draw her blood to monitor her PCV. She wags her tail on the x-ray table. She even wags her tail when we clean her spay incision multiple times a day. She is an incredible dog that has come through some bad times without any damage to her loving personality. She is so excited to be inside, and that someone is paying attention to her, that she doesn't care where she is or what she is doing. Someone is going to be so lucky to have her!

She will need a radical mastectomy and Dr. Fitzgerald at Alameda East has generously offered to help out the rescue with discounted services! He has a great love for the breed and grew up with Danes, so he is happy to be able to help out RMGDRI.

Maggie will be undergoing surgery on Tuesday, July 24th.

Maggie's surgery today was very long and much more extensive than Dr. Fitzgerald thought it would be. The tumor was bigger than x-rays revealed and had a lot of fingers which made it extremely difficult to remove and ensure clean margins. He did the best he could do under the circumstances though and she is now awake and recovering in ICU. She will remain at the hospital for tonight and possibly tomorrow night as well. They have her on very strong pain medications and will make sure that she is comfortable and monitored closely while she is there. Dr. Fitzgerald will be sending a sample off to pathology and we'll have the results on that soon.

Maggie's pathology results are back and we are very happy to report that they came back as an adnoma, which is a benign tumor. We were all pretty worried that it was going to be malignant and are overjoyed. The tumor was very cystic and hard to remove, so there is still some tumor in there, but Dr. Fitzgerald does not believe that any further surgery will be necessary and is confident she is on the road to recovery. Her sutures are almost ready to come out and she will be ready to go to her forever home as soon as the right family comes along!

Maggie went to her forever home with Sarah, Ian, and their son, Truman, in Littleton. They were so excited to meet their new addition! She even gave them kisses immediately. They had treats, leashes, & toys waiting for her. Maggie explored the entire house and backyard and was playing with her new friends, Monte the Golden Retriever and 2 cats, when we left.
