Zach is a very special boy with a wonderful spirit. His story begins when he was picked up as a stray by animal control in Colorado Springs. He was found wandering the streets and in very poor condition physically speaking. The AC officer took him straight to the Humane Society of Pike's Peak Region where he was kept for the remainder of his stray hold. The rescue coordinator contacted the rescue because she did not feel that he was adoptable to the general public and we readily agreed to bring him into rescue and have him evaluated by one of our vets in hopes that we could help him. |

| Zach
was seen by Douglas County Animal Hospital in Castle Rock yesterday, April
12, by Dr. Ballotti. She did a thorough physical exam and tested his range
of motion and checked for neurological problems. The exam revealed and overall
healthy dog with no pain. He had an old laceration on his chest, but it
did not look infected and was healing properly. Zach is fairly thin and does suffer from weakness in his back legs which Dr. Ballotti believes to be a result of poor nutrition, lack of proper exercise, and bad genetics. His front legs are bowed and his back legs are atrophied. At some point, he will develop arthritis and become more painful, but he is fine for now and balancing well on his hind legs, just using his front legs more. His heartworm test came back negative and he was vaccinated and sent home to his foster home with high hopes that good nutrition and regular walks will help him to gain more strength in his back legs and improve his coat and overall condition. Upon arrival at Bree's house, he happily greeted all three of her dogs and clearly does wonderful with dogs of all sizes. He doesn't have a mean bone in his body and is very affectionate! He does the typical Dane lean, gives lots of kisses, and is very goofy. He hasn't had any accidents and is very mellow and content to relax on the couch or bed. He tolerated his bath very well and even ate a good dinner last night. Zach is overall a very easy, well-adjusted dog, who brightens up the room when he enters. He may walk kind of funny and be lacking a little in the genetics department, but he has a beautiful heart and spirit that more than makes up for it! |

April 20th, 2006 Zach went to his forever home with Bree in Denver. He has a Chihuahua/Shepherd mix sister named Bobbie and a Cocker Spaniel sister named Sadie. His new mom fosters for us, so he will also get to play with lots of Dane friends through the years. Bree noticed something special about Zach the day he came into rescue and after getting to know him, she just couldn't imagine her life without this goofball! His new mom loves him unconditionally and doesn't even mind that he walks a little funny. Zach will be spoiled rotten and enjoy the life of pampering he deserves. |
