Basil

Basil came to us from Boulder Humane Society. She clearly had not had much socialization prior to coming into rescue. Her foster mom Sonya went to work immediately on socializing her first with her other dogs, which include a male husky mix (Alpha), a male husky, and another female Dane. Once she was able to work out her place in the pack and got comfortable with them, her foster mom began bringing her to the dog park where she met lots of other dogs and other people. When Basil first arrived she was very anxious and scared of everything! She was leery of men initially, but quickly conquered her fears and began approaching them without hesitation. Basil has adjusted very well to her new life in her foster home and after getting spayed at Bear Valley Veterinary Clinic, we were preparing to place her in her forever home when Basil got very, very sick.

Basil stopped eating or drinking on Thursday, November 3rd. By Saturday, we were very concerned and Sonya took her to the vet to get some fluids intravenously and antibiotics.

By Monday, Basil had not improved at all and was still refusing to eat. She had become very lethargic and had a fever of 104, so she was hospitalized by TLC Animal Hospital in Lafayette. Dr. Landry immediately put her on IV antibiotics and fluids and took x-rays. The x-rays revealed a severe case of pneumonia and the doctor felt the first thing we should rule out was canine influenza so we sent away for some tests. There haven't been any cases in Colorado as of yet, but he was very suspicious given the severity of her condition. Basil was in really bad shape and TLC is not a 24 hour hospital, so he advised us to move her to an emergency hospital overnight. Dr. Landry was nice enough to transfer her himself to Northside Emergency Pet Clinic in Westminster. They took wonderful care of her overnight and monitored her IV to make sure that everything kept flowing and her condition remained stable.

Basil was doing much better by Tuesday morning and had actually started eating without vomiting. Her temperature was back to normal, so they removed the IV and switched her over to oral meds. She was released and allowed to return to her foster home Tuesday evening. Sonya and her dogs were all happy to have her home and on the road to recovery! She gave us all quite a scare and we weren't sure if she was going to make it, but she has a strong spirit and wasn't about to give up on her chance at a happy life in her forever home.

Basil seems to be feeling better, but still isn't eating as much as we'd like her to be eating. We have decided to switch her over to Power Pack, which is higher in calories and should help her to gain weight faster. Her foster mom is mixing it with cottage cheese and a chicken thigh (boiled) shredded in her dry food. She's still on antibiotics for another week. She will be going to see Dr. Landry at TLC tomorrow for her checkup. She coughs all through the night but it could just be the congestion breaking up.

Basil went in for her check-up today. Dr. Landry said her temperature was a little high (102+). She's gained 3 lbs, but she is still coughing a lot and has a runny nose. He wants to see her 2 days before her antibiotics run out to see if she'll need to continue with them. Dr. Landry thinks it might take a couple more weeks to really kick this! Basil's foster mom is taking wonderful care of her, so she is in good hands. Keep her in your thoughts and prayers!

Basil saw Dr. Landry on Monday, November 21st for another follow-up visit. Her temperature was normal and she's gained 1.5 pounds since last week and is up to 87 lbs. She will continue with her antibiotics for 1 more week, and after that she should be medically cleared and ready to go to her forever home. She's full of energy and loves to play with her Dane foster sister, Bella. Bella's foster mom bought 3 turkeys for the dogs which she will cook, take the meat off the bone, make broth from the bones, and they'll have a very Happy Thanksgiving too!
