Meet Stella!!

Stella is our newest foster. She is another ER case. Stella is a 5 to 6
month old Harlequin. She has the sweetest personality. She was hit by a
car. She has a severely broken femur and crushed pelvis. Her owners were going to shoot her when a family member stepped in and took her to the Durango Animal Hospital. That's where Tara, a vet tech, contacted one of our volunteers to see if we could save this little girl. The volunteer
drove to Alamosa Wed night to meet us and get Stella to safety. Stella
went to the vet 4-29-04 where they reviewed her X-rays with specialists
and all feel that her leg will not be salvageable. We will keep you
up-to-date on her progress.

Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. Her medical treatments are currently unknown.

Stella's right back leg was removed on Friday because the damage was not fixable. Her femur was broken at the ball and the femur had pushed through the pelvis and crushed it. She was home with her foster family
on Saturday 5-1-04. She is getting around well, but still on some pain meds to make her comfortable.

5-4-04

Stella is getting along better everyday. She is getting around well and feeling better. She has a wonderful spirit and will need a home that can appreciate her just the way she is. Her stitches will be removed in 10 days.

The following photos are of her after her surgery, please be forewarned that they can be difficult to look at.

5-10-04

Stella was a hit at the Petco event. She loved everyone and loved being the center of attention. She will be having a check up in the morning and having her sutures removed. She went with us to pick up dog food at a volunteers house and loved running around her property. Stella is a very well behaved little girl with lots of love to give.

5-18-04

Stella is loving life. She runs, plays, and has started acting like a Dane. She loves the kids. Her favorite pastime is laying out in the front yard with the kids playing around her. She is ready for her new home when we find the right place for her. She does not like hard wood floors or tile. She has not learned the stairs either.

6-2-04

Stella visited her foster kids' school to educate the kids about caring for animals and about handicaps. She had a blast!!!

8-01-04

Stella has been adopted and now has a 7 month old Dane sister named Oola and they have been inseparable. Jon is her new dad.

We received the following email and photo from Stella's new family:

Thought you might like an update.

Stella received an A+ rating from the Vet. Her blood work checked out normal. The Vet suggested regular dosages of glucosamine to help forestall arthritis problems. We have started beginning obedience and she is doing very well.

She's a great dog...

Here are some current pictures of Stella. She is doing very well after a little "down time" late this summer. She graduated from Beginning Obedience school a couple of weeks ago and I plan to get her CGC certificate soon and start Therapy Dog training. She has adjusted well to her new life and is as beautiful as ever.
